Kent Fitness League, Minnis Bay – Sunday 2nd January 2022

*M&M back on top!*

The first Kent Fitness League cross country race of 2022 was held at Minnis Bay, Birchington this Sunday, with the six mile course featuring five infamous dykes, some with waist high mud and water that the athletes have to navigate. Despite the wet and muddy conditions, Medway & Maidstone AC fielded a strong team of twenty-six athletes.
Daniel St Martin was the first placed M&M athlete for the third time this season, finishing in 9th place. He was quickly followed by Jonathan Whittall in 10th then Carl Eldred, running his first KFL race, finishing 12th. Chris Rampling (18th) and Neill Wright (20th & 1st M45) helped M&M see five of their athletes finishing inside the top 20. The team continued to pack well down the field, with ten M&M athletes finishing inside the top 50 places. Alun Rodgers (24th) was 1st M55, stretching his lead at the top of the M55 standings with fellow M&M Gareth Williams not far behind. This saw the men’s team again finish first in the team result, cementing their place at the top of the standings.
First lady home for M&M was Chloe Hammond, finish 7th lady, her best result to date. Taryne McPherson battled through the dykes to finish 10th (3rd F45) and continue her challenge for a medal in the ladies standings. The final scoring lady for the ladies team was Rachel Cottam, in her first race for M&M, finish 36th lady. With the team still missing F55 athlete, the ladies team finished a respectable 8th.
The strong performances throughout both the men’s and ladies’ teams saw M&M finish 1st in the Combined Team result for the first time this season and keeps the hopes of defending their league title alive. The next league fixture is on Sunday 6th February at Blean Woods, Canterbury.

Club Helpers Wanted – We need your support! – December 2021

CLUB HELPERS WANTED – WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT

Running an athletic club requires a lot of support and the club is completely reliant on volunteers.  Each year we lose and gain athletes.  When we lose athletes, we often also lose the support of their parents.  Some of our volunteers started helping with their children many years ago and continue to support the club. In some cases, they have helped for decades.  Many of our helpers are also competing athletes. Recently we have started to lose some of our long-standing volunteers, at the same time struggling to get new volunteers to replace them.  Many of our regular volunteers are now carrying out multiple roles within the club.  Typical of the problem are coaches where they are trying to supervise their group at the track, but at the same time are also trying to sort out membership queries, club vest issues, payments, team queries, Medway Park issues etc.  At times things can be difficult for those involved and we really need to increase the number of volunteers to ensure the club can continue successfully.

All future new members, and where relevant their parents/guardians, will be asked to go through a quick induction to outline how the club operates (an explanation of age groups, leagues, the requirement for athletes to compete etc.) and also to ask how new members and their parents/guardians can help the club.

Medway & Maidstone AC is a competitive club and competes in numerous leagues, covering all age groups.  The main aim of our coaches is to train athletes to compete and the club expects all those training to be part of their respective age group competing team whenever possible.  We also require support from volunteers to ensure our teams can train regularly and compete successfully.

There are many support roles that are essential for the training of athletes and for running athletics meetings. It is hoped that everyone connected with the club will be able to help in some way. The following is a breakdown of some of the roles required just to keep an athletic club active.  Please consider how you can help and then let us know so we can help you to help us.  This is vitally important if we are to continue to train, compete and hold home meetings.

The more volunteers we can get, the easier it will be for everyone as we can then spread the load. A reduced or even free membership is available for those that help on a regular basis over a full season.

The following text mainly relates to Medway Park where we currently need a lot of assistance.  Sutton Valence track has a different arrangement for maintenance of the track and field and this is carried out by the school, with support from club members. If you are a parent or athlete at Sutton Valence and want to get involved in volunteering (particularly in officiating) please liaise with Steve Fury or Paul Young in the first instance.

OFFICIALS AND MEETING HELPERS

Every athletic league that the club currently competes in requires officials to be provided by all competing clubs (for both home and away meetings).  When the required officials aren’t provided, the team lose points. These points are deducted from the points gained by the athletes competing in track and field events.  Specific field events are designated to competing clubs and the clubs must then cover these events with both trained officials and helpers. In addition to the field event team(s), a specific number of track judges and timekeepers are also required.  For home meetings, the home club is also required to provide other officials and admin support, in addition to those above, to ensure the meeting runs efficiently.

It is always beneficial to athletes when they can compete at their home venue.  However, running a home meeting requires more support than away meetings and we often struggle to put on home meetings.  When we hold Open Meetings at Medway Park, we are often limited in the events we can put in place as we frequently don’t have enough officials/helpers.

Currently, the club is desperately short of officials/helpers generally, but especially to cover field events, so if you can help out, please let us know.

Getting started as an official is very straight forward and initially just requires helping the trained officials with tasks such as measuring, raking the sandpit, replacing high jump/pole-vault bars, holding measuring tapes or retrieving implements.  The club intends to hold training sessions through winter and spring to give those unfamiliar with events a better insight into the required duties and clarify key rules.  At league meetings, the points that are awarded (or deducted) for officials relates to trained officials, so it is also important we continue to move some helpers up the ladder. Initially this is very straight forward and requires involvement at just 4 meetings and a one-day training course (paid for by the club) to attain Level 1.

The club is very lucky to have several very highly qualified officials that have helped the club for many years such as Sarah and Maureen Fletcher, Andy Midwinter and Sian Thomas and they, along with others, are always willing to act in a mentoring role.

It is appreciated that parents can sometimes be concerned that they will miss their children competing if they are volunteering.  In most cases we can work round this, so that they can do both.

ROLES WITHIN THE CLUB

FIELD EVENTS OFFICIALS & HELPERS

As mentioned above, we require numerous volunteers to manage field events at every meeting we attend.  Getting started is very easy and there will always be support from a trained official.

TRACK OFFICIALS, TIMEKEEPERS & ASSISTANT STARTERS

For anyone interested in helping in track-related events there are three distinct roles. The duties of Track Judges, amongst other things, are monitoring finishing positions, track etiquette and lane discipline. Timekeepers record athlete’s finishing times, again under supervision of trained officials.  Assistant Starters work at the start of races to ensure athletes are in the correct lanes and starting positions etc.  The Assistant Starter works with the Starter to ensure races start to the required rules.  The club and athletics generally are desperately short of starters and this is another role you may consider working towards. As with the field events, volunteer helpers will always be working under supervision.

WORK AT MEDWAY PARK

The Centre at Medway Park provide limited support for athletics such as grass cutting and some funding for larger infrastructure work. Athletics meetings are completely managed by the club.  The club also provides practically all of the loose equipment for training and competition. The club also maintains all the loose equipment and a lot of the fixed equipment.

For home meetings, we require a team to organize the track and field equipment as well as other set-up equipment, such as barriers, refreshments for officials, results and the PA system.  There is a lot of work required setting up before a meeting starts, as well as during the meeting and at the end to clear away.  Traditionally we use young athletes to help and the club pays them for this, working alongside a couple of regular adult supervisors.  However, this isn’t always easy as the young athletes can only do this when they are not competing. Therefore, they are only available for specific meetings.  We, therefore, also need several adults to become part of this team. As with other roles, you won’t be expected to work on your own and the more volunteers we get the less frequent you will be required.

In addition to the work required on the day of home meetings, there is also a lot of work required to keep equipment in good order for training and competition generally and also to ensure England Athletics rules (which change on a regular basis) are met.  In addition to general work, we also frequently require help from volunteers with special skills.  General work includes clearing track edges, painting track marks, clearing out and setting up long jump/triple jump troughs, changing hammer wires, maintaining starting blocks and hurdles, tidying around the throwing areas etc., etc.  For more specific new/improvement work we would benefit greatly from anyone with special skills such as concrete/slabbing, carpentry, sheet metal workers/fabrication or any other building/engineering specialist skill, although for many tasks we will be just grateful for an extra pair of hands. We currently have a list of improvements we would like to complete before the start of the 2022 season.

ASSISTANT COACHES

Much of the success of the club is down to the day-to-day coaching by our coaching teams at Medway Park and Sutton Valence who work very hard all year round.  We are, however, always looking for volunteers to help our coaches.  Some volunteers are just happy supporting coaches by carrying out tasks such as helping with warm ups, getting equipment out or timing athlete’s interval sessions. Others may want to take this further by attending a Coaching Assistant course (paid for by the club), then even further by attending an Athletics Coach course. Currently we are desperately short of volunteer helpers to assist the younger group coaches at Medway Park.  Anyone interested in helping out our coaches please let us know, especially if you have a younger child training at Medway Park.

TEAM MANAGERS

Team Managers are required to cover all age groups, male and female, from Under 13s to Masters and for Winter and Summer seasons.  With the younger age groups, it is normal for parent Team Managers to move up to manage a different age group as their children move up an age group.  This means we are regularly looking for new Team Manager volunteers, especially for the youngest age groups.  It is also important to get potential managers agreed in advance so that they can work for a season or part season to learn the required duties from the existing manager.

GENERAL CLUB SUPPORT

In addition to the above specific roles, the club also needs volunteers to cover a wide range of other roles such as results inputting, club clothing, general admin, etc.

PLEASE CONSIDER HOW YOU WOULD LIKE TO HELP THE CLUB IN ONE (OR MORE) OF THE FOLLOWING ROLES:

  • Field Official Volunteer/official
  • Track Judge Volunteer/official
  • Timekeeper Volunteer/official
  • Assistant Starter Volunteer/official
  • Medway Park Athletics Meeting Team helper
  • Medway Park maintenance/improvement Team
  • Coach helper
  • Assistant Coach
  • Team Manager Volunteer
  • Miscellaneous general club support

If you can help in any way, please contact Steve Hesketh at hesketh.steve@googlemail.com or discuss with your immediate club contact.

Kent Masters Cross-Country Championships, Dartford – 4th December 2021

MEDWAY & MAIDSTONE AC MASTERS WIN GOLD, SILVER & 2 BRONZE TEAM MEDALS AT COUNTY CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Kent Masters Cross-country Championships is a very hotly contested series of races for the top Masters runners in Kent and the |South East of London.   Cross-Country Masters Cross-country races start at 40 plus for men and 35 plus for women, with team and individual awards being made at these and older age groups. For the races this year at Dartford, Medway & Maidstone AC men’s and women’s teams had a very successful day with team medals in all 4 categories entered.

The most successful age group for Medway & Maidstone AC was in the men’s M50 – M59 8.7 Km race, were the club repeated their achievement of 2019 with team gold.  The rules have changed since 2019, teams now requiring 4 runners (previously 3) The club’s winning 4-to-score team was led by Noel Lyons (M50) who just missed out on an individual medal, finishing in 4th place (32.21).  Lyons was very closely followed by team mate Gareth Williams (M55) in 5th (32.27) with Alun Rodgers (M55) in 8th (32.45) and Martin Taylor (M50) in 21st (34.56) completing the team.  Further back-up was provided by Richard Kerswill (M50) in 24th (35.22),  Bob Fursey (M55) in 49th (37.41) and Adrian Donnelly (M50) in 60th (38.31).  The race was won by British and World Masters Champion, Ben Reynolds (M55) representing Tonbridge AC (30.30).  William Pitt (M50) took silver for Kent AC, Christopher Turner (M50) – Dartford AC took bronze (32.00)

In the men’s M40-M49 8.7 Km race, the club claimed the bronze team award.  Kent AC took team gold, with Blackheath and Bromley in silver. M & M were led by Anthony Webb (M45) who took the individual bronze medal (29.13). The team was completed by Mark Wilkins (M40) in 5th (30.09), Neill Wright (M45) in 10th and a gutsy run by Darren Wright (M45) in 32nd to take his first Kent county medal (34.23). The race was won by Micah Evans (M40) of Blackheath & Bromley AC, Nick Collins (M40) of Ashford and District AC taking individual silver (29.02).

In the M60-M69 5.4 Km race Paul McAuliffe (M65) was the club’s only runner finishing in 8th (22.40) out of a strong entry of 40. Nigel Read (M70), in the same race, finished in 14th place in the M70 category (34.29).

The club’s women also had a great day’s racing.  The W45-54 team had a superb result claiming silver. Looking back through over 20 years of records, this appears to be the first ever club medal for this age group. This, along with the W35 team medal, shows how strong this section of the club has become. Tonbridge AC took gold and Central Park Athletics bronze. In the W45 category, Taryne McPherson (W45) was first home for the club in 6th (22.32), Jenny Fowler (W45) in 10th (23.09) and Karen Cudmore (W45) 17th (24.17) completing the team.  The race was won by Julie Backley (W50) of Cambridge Harriers (21.22), with Hazel Behagg (W45) of Dartford Road Runners (21.31) taking silver, Maria Heslop (W50) of Tonbridge AC claiming bronze (21.53).

Kent Fitness League, Oxleas Wood, Eltham – Sunday 28th November

*Woolley conquers the cold*

Medway and Maidstone AC went to Oxleas Wood, Eltham this Sunday for the second fixture of the Kent Fitness League.  Despite the club being hit with injuries and illness, there was still a strong team competing, highlighted by Harriette Woolley, making her debut appearance for M&M as a second claim athlete.  She crossed the line as first lady, opening up an almost 30 second gap on the nearest rival.

First male for M&M was Daniel St-Martin, building on his strong start to the league with a 4th placed finish.  Next home was Neill Wright (16th & 1st M45) and Jayden Iles (25th).  Taryne McPherson had another strong run (5th lady & 3rd V45) maintaining her hunt for a V45 medal.  Also in the hunt for medals, Alun Rodgers outperformed his rivals to take over at the top of the M50 standings with Gareth Williams, 4th in the standings, keeping the pressure on the leaders.  Paul McAuliffe went one better than the last race, finishing as 1st M60, closing the gap to the leader at the top of the M60 standings.

The team results saw Medway and Maidstone finish 1st in the male team results, but only 9th in the female result as they still don’t have an over 55 lady to complete the team.  Despite this, the combined team results saw M&M finish in 2nd place which sees the club keep the pressure on the lead clubs going into the next race, two week’s time at Betteshanger Park.

British Masters 10k Road Championships, Cyclopark, Gravesend – Sunday 21st November

British Masters 10 km Road Championships – Medway & Maidstone AC take 4 golds & 1 silver

After an absence of 4 years, the British Masters 10 Km Road Championships returned to the Cyclopark at Gravesend.  Medway & Maidstone AC, who currently have an extremelystrong Master’s team, had some amazing individual and team results across a wide range of age groups.

The club’s top run of the day must go to Anthony Webb who won the M45 individual gold in a time of 32.27 for a new club record, PB and 6th on the UK rankings.  Webb led the overall race for 3 of the 4 laps and was only overhauled by Ben Kruze (Midland Masters 31.57) who was running in the younger M35 age category.  In the M45 – M54 team category, Webb was followed by Justin Lane (5th M45 34.19 PB) and Neill Wright (9th M45 36.21) which was good enough to give the club team gold. Darren Wright also had a great day with a PB of nearly 2 minutes (39.41).

Tom Collins took the individual bronze in the M35 category (fastest 10 Km time for 3 years – 33.35). He was supported in the M35 team by Daniel St Martin (6th overall M35 with a massive 1.22 PB in 34.37) and Noel Lyons who as an M50 ran ‘down’ an age group to complete the team. This proved to be a great decision as his excellent run (37.02) completed the team for another team gold.

Not be outdone, in the M55 – M64 category, Alun Rogers(M55) who had a 38.21 PB, supported by Bob Fursey (M55 42.11) and Paul McAuliffe (M65 42.47) running ‘down’ an age group, also took the team gold medal.

The club’s women also had a very good day, again with excellent individual and team results. Liz Weeks with her fastest 10 Km time for 6 years (4th W40 38.52), was followed by Taryne McPherson (5th W45 42.44) and Chloe Hammond in her first 10 Km Road race with a very respectable 44.25.

Kent Cross Country League, Foots Cray – 27th November 2021

After large entries for the first two races, Medway & Maidstone AC struggled to fill the 12-to-score Senior Men’s team for the 3rd race at Foots Cray. With many marathons being moved to Autumn this year, a very busy racing calendar and the club also competing on Sunday, a full and fit team was difficult to put together.  Nevertheless, 12 runners did turn out and completed the 8 Km course without injury. Tonbridge, once again, were 1st in the 4-to-score and 12-to-score teams, with Medway taking 2nd (out of 18 complete teams) in the 4-to-score.  This leaves the club 2nd overall with just one remaining race.  The 12-to-score team, with two previous 2nd places, slipped to 3rd on the day, but remain in a clear 2nd place overall.

M & M’s top scorer was Tom Collins in 10th, leaving him 4th overall after 3 races. Tewelde Menges shows signs of returning to his previous form, finishing in 12th.  Anthony Webb (M45) continued his great season finishing in 15th. After 3 races he has a clear overall lead in the master’s competition. The 4-to-score team was closed by Jacques Cunningham-Marsh in 17th.

Completing the club’s 12-to-score positions were: – Mark Wilkins (M40 in 28th), Neill Wright (M45 in 38th), Jack Crossley (M40 in 41st), Noel Lyons (M50 in 44th) who is clear leader in the M50 competition, Gareth William (M55 in 56th), Sean Rodwell (65th), Alun Rodgers (M55 87th) and Bob Fursey (M55 in 170th).

Whilst the team continues to compete at a high level, severaltop positions continue to be filled by Master 40 and Master 50 runners.  Looking forward, it would be good to see more younger runners coming into the team. It’s good to see that looking at the younger age groups there are some good prospects for the team in the next few seasons.

The final race in the Kent League is on 12th February 2022, at Norman Park Bromley. The next race for the club’s Masters is the Kent Cross-country Championships at Dartford next week-end, where the club has some strong teams entered.

The 4th and final meeting of the Kent Cross Country League for the U17s and U20s. With the temperature just above freezing and a strong wind, made this a challenging course. The U17s team were represented by Cameron & Callum Featherstone, who both run strong races finishing 12th & 18th respectively, in a very strong field of athletes. The U20 Men were unable to defend the Team title they won last time out, finishing a creditable 2nd place overall by only 1 point. The Team were represented by Alex Donnelly who placed 8th on the day and fiished the league season 4th overall, just missing out on an individual medal.  Sean Barwick finished 14th after unfortunately taking a wrong turn on the course (6th overall in championship standing), Isaac Thomas made up the team on the day finishing 13th.

In the U13 boys Reuben Sarakbi was the first finisher (10th), the scoring was completed by Owen Tucker (24th) and Henry Powell (34th), Supported by Jake Alford (41st), Dominic Powell (49th) and Sebastian Charilaou (60th). They finished 5th team on the day and 5th overall.

The U15 boys team continued their rich vein of form with Alex Dack winning, closely followed by Franklin Shepherd in 2nd place and Theo Ronchetti (9th) supported by Jay Trimmer (33rd). The team were winners on the day and took the team title (winning 3 of the 4 matches) alongside Franklin Shepherd who took the individual title.

M&M’s U17 & U20 Women were out in force again The ladies finished the league with more excellent performances leading to some great final standings in both the individual and team league tables.  In the Under 17 event, Lily Crossley was first back in 6th position, her highest position over all four events.  She was followed soon afterwards by Abigail Royden in 7th place, continuing her excellent season.  Next back was Lola Sutton in 14th position, Ella Webb  (16th) and Annabel Young (17th), Jenny Swandale (29th), Ingrid Linn (33rd), and Ciara Harrop (40th).  The Under 17 Women finished second in the team event on the day and in a very creditable third place overall in the league.  In the individual league standings, Abigail Royden finished third overall.

In the Under 20 Women’s event, Billie Rouse finished in 3rd place and Rachel Anderson finished 6th.  Billie was also crowned Kent League U20 Women’s Champion after her solid performances across the four races.

A number of the M&M U17 & U20 women have been selected to represent Kent in the Inter Counties cross country event in Croydon in December thanks to their performances in the Kent League.  Congratulations to Abigail Royden, Lily Crossley, Ella Webb, Charlotte Young, Billie Rouse and Rachel Anderson.

The U15 girls saw Iris Crossley and Natalie Austin fighting to the line for 5th and 6th place respectively. Strong support from Millie Dack (14th) finishing the 3 to score team and an overall 2nd place in the final team standings. Iris Crossley taking first place individual honours over the 4 races. Further team support came from  Heidi Hughes (28th), Ferne Pierce (35th), Abigail Hawkes (37th), Molly Marsh (43rd), Erin Marsh (44th) and Sophie Stratford (45th). Iris Crossley and Natalie Austin both gaining Kent selection for the Inter-counties race on 11th December.

Rose Crossley finished another competitive race in 3rd place. Strong support from Sienna Mabb (15th) and Sophie Cudmore-Smith (16th) completed team scoring. The team finishing in an impressive 1st place in the overall team standings. Additional support from team-mates Sienna Gratwick (33rd) and Darcy Scott (37th). Rose Crossley and Sophie Cudmore-Smith finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively in the overall individual standings and selection for Kent for the Inter-counties race on December 11th in Croydon
