SAL, Saturday 19 August – Battersea Park

M&M ladies and men competed in the final Southern Athletics League of the season at Battersea Park on Saturday 19 August. They put up a mighty battle finishing 3rd of the four teams in Division 2 East but doing enough to avoid demotion and remain in division 2 for another season.

The ladies put in some fine performances. There were 1st places for Elleanor Callaghan-Inge (A) and Lucy Hope (B) in both the 100m and 200m respectively with times of 12.9 and 13.7 and 27.3 and 27.3. Lucy also taking 3rd in the (B) long jump 3.98m with Harriet Wilder 3rd (A) 4.26m. Lola Wheeler had a busy day with 2nd place in both the 400m (B) 66.6 and 800m (A) 2.28.1, 3rd place in both the 1500 (A) 5.07.5 and Shot Putt 7.87m. Stephanie Hearn ran well with 3rd in the 800m (B) 2.45.3, 4th in a strong 3000m field in 11.21.8 and 3rd in the 2000m Steeplechase (A) 8.57.2. Mo Fazakerley, again, covering the hammer, triple jump, Steeplechase and running close to her best in the 1500 (B) in 6.14.3.

With Jess Blake picking up a number of points by covering the ‘A’ field events with a pb in the triple jump 3rd place 7.90m, 3rd in the discus 18.45m, 4th in the Shot Putt 6.91m and 1st in the hammer with a pb throw of 29.67m. With tired legs, the ladies managed to cover both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays for 3rd place.

Equally, the men performed just as well despite missing some key players.

Adam Thompson had a fine 400m “A” victory in 51.3 sec adding 200 M “B” victory with Sprinter Alex Marshall equaling his 11.1 Sec PB for 2nd place in “A” race to go with his 3rd in 200M “A”. The 800M had 2nd places in A and B races for Jake Berry and Jacques Cunningham Marsh with Jake also in 1500M “A” with Tom Collins 3rd “B”. Tewelde Menges secured victory in the 5000M “A” race with Mark Wilkins 2nd in “B”. Tewelde was also 2nd “A” in 2000 Steple Chase were Simon Habtom securing “B” victory.

The Jumps saw 2nd places for both Joe Thurgood and George Blake in Pole Vault A and B despite having to borrow poles on the day. The same two securing the same finishing positions also in High Jump.  

The throws saw a rare appearance and 2nd place in the “A” Discus for Martin Brockman with a 35.00 plus throw. The same position was secured by Clive Thompson in the “A” Hammer with a 25.54 throw. Stuart Earl had a season’s best 9.18M Shot Putt for 3rd “A” with Will Blake 2nd “B”.

The 4 x 400 team secured a 2nd place to finish the day in what was a very enjoyable mat.
