Southern Athletic League, Chelmsford – Saturday 15th June 2019

Medway and Maidstone AC Ladies and Men competed in there 3rd Southern Athletic League fixture at Chelmsford last Saturday and despite finishing in 4th place there were some excellent performances in a very competitive match.

The Men’s track had victories for Adam Thompson in the 400m ‘A’ 49.9s and George Clements ‘B’ 51.7s. In the 5000m Tewelde Menges claimed ‘A’ race victory a 12 second PB 15.10.4s. Tom Collins also securing the ‘B’ race 16.23.1s. The pair doubled again for both ‘A’ and ‘B’ victories in the 2000m s/chase. Marley Godden was 2nd in the 1500m ‘A’ 4:16.3s with U17 Alex Donnelly winning the ‘B’ race 4:28.7 a fine double as Alex had also won the ‘B’ 800m earlier in 2:06.1 with Andrejs Safars 3rd ‘A’ 2:03.5 3rd ‘A’. In a strong 400mH Lewis Heffernan was 3rd ‘A’ 57.4s with George Blake same position in ‘B’ race 62.2s. Rory Kuypers was 3rd in the 100m in 11.7 s with U17 Harvey Weed 4th ‘B’. In the 4x100m relay George Blake had to break off from his Pole Vault to help George Clements, Lewis Heffernan and Adam Thompson to gain a 44.9s victory before returning to complete ‘A’ victory. Equally thrilling the 4×400 relay with the squad of George Clements, Lewis Heffernan, Andrejs Safars and Adam Thompson just pipped for 2nd place in a time of 3.29.5. Lewis and Andrejs both had 2nd places in Triple Jump also teamed up in 110m hurdles. With Andrejs and Mark Rothery gaining valuable points in High Jump. Throwers, Will Blake, Charles Flynn and Reece Perkins had a difficult afternoon against very strong opposition but there was a senior PB in the Hammer for U20 Reece 34.19m.

The ladies saw some strong performances across the day. A victory for Lucy Hope ‘A’ 100m 13.0s and also 2nd in the 200m 26.1s. U17 Katie Rothery running a PB in the 100m ‘B’ 14.4s and U20 Eleanor Wastell 2nd ‘B’ in the 200m. In the 400mH U20 Emily Featherstone was 2nd ‘A’ 71.50s and in the 100mH 3rd ‘A’ 17.4s. U17 Charlotte Young was 4th in the 400m ‘A’ with a PB 62.6 and 3rd in the 800m ‘A’ 2:29s. U17 Erin Hughes 3rd ‘B’ in a PB 66.2s. Emily Hale finished 3rd in the 800m ‘B’ in 2:39.1 and then went on to compete in the 3000m finishing 2nd in a new PB 11:01.7. A track debut for Antel Muller also with a PB 12:01.0 for 2nd ‘B’ after finishing 4th in the 1500m 5:49.3s. V45 Bernadette Harrop 4th ‘B’ 6:06.9 and 2nd in the 2000m steeplechase ‘A’ 9:41.8s.

There was a very high standard across the field events from all the Clubs. V45 Vanessa Hannam was 4th ‘A’ in the Shot 10.19m, 2nd ‘A’ Discus 35.35m, 3rd ‘A’ Javelin 27.42m and 4th ‘B’ and PB in the Hammer. Clubmate Jessica Blake 4th ‘B’ Shot 7.79m, 3rd ‘B’ Discus 23.93m and 3rd ‘A’ Hammer 37.07m. Katie Rothery was 4th ‘B’ Javelin 14.24m and 3rd triple jump ‘B’ with a PB 8.58m. Olivia Harrison was 4th ‘A’ 9.35m, 3rd ‘B’ Long Jump and PB 4.20m. Olivia also 4th ‘A’ High Jump 1.25m and Emily Hale 4th ‘B’ 1.05m. Erin Hughes was 4th ‘A’ Long Jump 4.35m.

There were strong performances in both relays with 2nd places in both the 4x100m, Rothery, Featherstone, Wastell, Hope 51.90s and in the 4x400m Hughes, Featherstone Wastell and Hope 4:17.6s
