Southern Athletic League, Bournemouth – Saturday 13th July 2019

Medway and Maidstone AC Ladies and Men had a lengthy journey to Bournemouth on Saturday to contest their 4th Southern Athletic League fixture but where rewarded with an excellent 2nd place to the home team.

The men’s match had excellent performances. In the middle distance events saw A and B 800m victories for Michael Major 2:00.1 and Marley Godden 2:01.8. Marley was also 2nd A 1500m in 4:08.7 with Jacques Cunningham Marsh winning B 4:15.8. Tewelde Menges won the A 3000m in 8:56.6 and Tom Collins 2nd B 9:20.1. Tewelde also went on to win the A 3000m s/chase 9:52:9 with Tom also winning B 10:41.2. Adam Thompson had a well timed victory in the 400m A race 50.1s and Andrejs Safars 2nd B 54.9s. In the sprints Rory Kuypers was 3rd in the 100m A 11.7s with Myles Lynch recording same time for 2nd B. Rory was 3rd A again in the 200m 23.0s with Myles again 2nd B in the same time. In the 400m Hurdles Lewis Heffernan was 2nd A 58.0s, George Blake winning the B in 62.2s. Lewis was 4th A in 110 Hurdles 17.8s and Andrejs Safars 2nd B 20.6s.

In the Jumps George Blake produced a 3.70m PB to win the A Pole Vault. Andrejs Safars 2nd B in 2.15m. Robert Mills was another with a PB for a 12.37m 3rd place in the Triple  Jump A. Lewis Heffernan was 2nd in B with 11.95m. Robert also with a PB of 5.59m in the Long Jump B. There were 3rd places for Andrejs Safars and Mark Rothery in the High Jump with 1.65m and 1.55m respectively.

The Throws produced steady points. U20 Reece Perkins was another with a PB for a 35.23m 3rd place in the Hammer with Charles Flynn 26.73m for 2nd B. George Blake had a 38.46m 3rd A in Javelin with Sean Rodwell 2nd B 35.85m. George also producing a 26.87m Discus and 9.55m Shot Putt.

The novel mixed 4×400 relays saw 3rd place for the A team of Andrejs Safars, Lucy Hope, Darcey Kuypers and Adam Thompson. The B team of Michael Major, Erin Hughes, Emily Featherstone and George Blake claiming victory.

The women had a strong afternoon across both the track and field events. Lucy Hope finished 2nd in both the 100m A 12.9s and 200m A 26.3s. Zara Edeleanu 3rd B 13.6s and 2nd in her first Long Jump of the season in a brilliant 4.99m. Abigail Walters also performed strongly in the 200m with a PB 27.1s and also contesting the 100m in 13.4s and taking 3rd in the High Jump A 1.35m with Grace Adeleye 2nd B 1.30m. There was also a PB for Emily Featherstone in the 100mH A 17.0s and another PB run for 1st in the 400m B 61.4s. In a change of events for the day Darcey Kuypers run strongly in the 400m for 1st A 59.8s before contesting both relays. Katie Rothery won the 400m Hurdles A 77.80s and then 1st again in the Triple Jump B 8.47m with Grace Adeleye finishing 1st A 9.28m. The middle distance events saw Charlotte Young doubling up in the 800m and 1500m A string for 3rd 2:28.7 and 4th 5:14.4 repectively. Erin Hughes finished 2nd B 2:38.9. Stephanie Hearn had a busy day contesting first the 5000m with a PB in finishing 3rd A 19:05.0, 1500 1st B 5:17.8 and then the 1500m Steeplechase for 2nd A 6:23.0 with Bernadette Harrop 2nd B 6:43.7.Rachael Stewart 3rd B in the 5000m 24:39s.

In the field events our Hammer throwers saw wins for both Grace Adeleye A 41.96m and Jess Blake 37.54m. Grace also taking 2nd place in the B Shot 7.31m and 2nd Discus B 21.50m. Vanessa Hannam was 1st in the Discus 34.62m, 2nd A Shot 10.21m and 2nd Javelin 28.40m. The 4x100m relay team of Walters, Hope, Edeleanu and Kuypers finish 2nd in 51.10s. Medway & Maidstone’s final SAL match will be at home at Medway Park on Saturday 17th August.
